Tool descriptors

The normative definition of tool descriptors, which describe how SLCR runs the tools validators use.

This page defines tool descriptors. The key words MUST, MUST NOT, SHOULD, and MAY are used as defined in RFC 2119 (external site). For the ideas behind descriptors, see Validators.

A descriptor is a TOML file. It is declarative: SLCR reads it and runs the command it describes, but the descriptor itself is never executed.

FieldsLink to this section

FieldRequiredValue
formatVersionYesThe string "1".
nameYesThe default tool name: lowercase letters and digits in dash-separated words.
versionYesThe descriptor's SemVer 2.0.0 version. This is the version of the descriptor, not of the tool it runs.
validator.schemaYesThe JSON Schema every validator's with must satisfy.
invokeYesHow to run the tool.
resultsNoHow to read the outcome.

Unknown fields MUST NOT appear.

TOML
formatVersion = "1"
name = "cargo-nextest"
version = "1.0.0"

[validator.schema]
type = "object"
required = ["test"]
additionalProperties = false
properties.test = { type = "string", minLength = 1, description = "Fully qualified test name." }

[invoke]
argv = ["cargo", "nextest", "run", "--no-fail-fast", "--no-tests=fail",
        "-E", "test(={with.test})"]
cwd = { nearest = "Cargo.toml" }

[results]
pass = [0]

validator.schemaLink to this section

  • The schema MUST be a valid JSON Schema (draft 2020-12), written as TOML.
  • Its top level MUST have type = "object".
  • Every $ref MUST resolve within the schema itself.
  • It MUST NOT contain TOML dates or times.

invokeLink to this section

FieldRequiredValue
argvYesThe command, as an array: a program name, then argument templates.
cwdYesThe working directory.
envNoA table of environment variables to set or override. If present, it MUST NOT be empty.
timeoutNoSeconds before the run is killed, as a positive integer. Without it, there is no timeout.

The command runs directly, never through a shell, with standard input closed. The child process inherits the environment, with env applied on top.

argvLink to this section

  • The first element MUST be a bare program name, such as cargo. It is looked up on PATH. It MUST NOT contain a path separator or a placeholder.
  • Each later element is exactly one argument. Substitution never splits or joins arguments.

PlaceholdersLink to this section

Arguments MAY contain placeholders:

PlaceholderValue
{with.<field>}A top-level field of the validator's with.
{slcr.project_root}The directory that holds SLCR.toml.
{slcr.validator_dir}The directory that holds the validator file.
{slcr.requirement}The qualified requirement ID, such as todo-api/REQ-002.
  • A field named by {with.<field>} MUST be declared in the schema's top-level properties, MUST be listed in required, and MUST be a scalar type: string, number, integer, or boolean.
  • {{ and }} write a literal brace. A lone { or } is an error.

cwdLink to this section

ValueDirectory
"project"The project root.
"validator-dir"The directory that holds the validator file.
{ nearest = "<file>" }The closest of the validator's directory and its ancestors, up to the project root, that contains an entry named <file>. <file> MUST be a file name, not a path.

If the directory can't be found, the validator can't be run.

envLink to this section

Variable names MUST match ^[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*$. Values are literal strings.

resultsLink to this section

FieldRequiredValue
passNoThe exit codes that mean green, as a non-empty array with no duplicates. Defaults to [0].

Any other exit code, a signal, or a timeout means red.

Pins and the descriptor storeLink to this section

A project declares each descriptor in SLCR.toml with a pin: the BLAKE3 hash of the descriptor's exact bytes. Any change to a descriptor, including whitespace, requires a new pin, made with slcr tools update.

Installed descriptors are stored on each machine under the platform's data directory (on Linux, $XDG_DATA_HOME/slcr, or ~/.local/share/slcr if XDG_DATA_HOME isn't set), filed by pin. Projects that pin the same bytes share one stored file. SLCR checks a stored descriptor against its pin before every use and replaces one that doesn't match when installing.
