Troubleshoot slcr check

What each slcr check failure means and how to resolve it.

slcr check reports one line per validator, then a summary for each specification:

Terminal
$ slcr check
src/.validators.slcr.toml validator 1 (shop/REQ-002, sh): red (exit 101)
src/.validators.slcr.toml validator 2 (shop/REQ-004, sh): green
shop: 5 satisfied, 2 unsatisfied, 0 unknown

Details for each problem follow on stderr. Validators are named by file and position. Find the entry, then use the sections below. To see a validator's full output, run slcr check --format json.

Vetting failed, and nothing ranLink to this section

check vets the project first and runs no validators if vetting fails. Run slcr vet for the full list of problems. Each finding is labeled at its location in the file.

FindingFix
descriptor-not-installedRun slcr tools install. Common on a fresh clone or a new CI runner.
dangling-referenceA link names an ID that doesn't exist. Correct the ID or add the node.
duplicate-idGive the newer node the next unused ID.
cycleRemove one of the refines or dependsOn links the finding lists.
missing-refinementSomething refines this requirement. Set refinement to AND, OR, or XOR.
unexpected-refinementNothing refines this requirement. Remove refinement, or add the missing refines links on its children.
term-out-of-orderSort glossary.terms by ID.
unknown-requirement, unknown-specA validator names a requirement or specification that doesn't exist. Check the qualified ID, such as todo-api/REQ-002.
unknown-criterionThe validator's criterion belongs to a different requirement.
tool-not-declaredDeclare the tool with slcr tools add, or correct the validator's tool.
invalid-withThe validator's with doesn't match the tool's schema. Run slcr tools show <tool> to see the expected fields.
no-matchA specs pattern in SLCR.toml matches no file. Correct the pattern or remove it.

With --deny-warnings, warnings also fail. The common ones are modality-not-stated (put the modality keyword in the body, in capitals) and vacuous-and (every refiner of an AND is MAY).

A validator is redLink to this section

The tool ran and failed. check prints the end of its stdout and stderr.

  1. Read the output to see what failed.
  2. Decide whether the code or the validator is wrong:
    • If the code doesn't meet the requirement, fix the code.
    • If the validator is out of date, for example because a test was renamed or moved, update the validator.
  3. Don't change the requirement just to make the validator pass. Change a requirement only if what the software should do has changed.

A validator could not be runLink to this section

The tool didn't start, so the validator proves nothing either way. Its requirement counts as unknown, and check fails. The message says why:

CauseFix
The program wasn't found on PATHInstall the program, or add its directory to PATH. In CI, add an install step.
The working directory doesn't existCheck the descriptor's cwd, and that the validator file is where you expect.
No nearest file was foundThe descriptor's cwd = { nearest = "..." } found no such file between the validator's directory and the project root.

These are environment problems. Don't change product code to fix them.

A requirement is unsatisfied, but its validators are greenLink to this section

A parent's status comes from its refiners. Find the refiner that's unsatisfied:

Shell
slcr query "MATCH (c:Requirement)-[:REFINES]->(p:Requirement {id: 'REQ-001'}) RETURN c.id, c.title"

Then check that refiner's validators. An XOR parent is also unsatisfied when more than one refiner is satisfied.

A requirement is unknownLink to this section

Nothing decides it yet. There are three causes:

  • It has no validators, and nothing refines it. The summary line counts these as coverage gaps:

    Terminal
shop: 6 satisfied, 0 unsatisfied, 1 unknown (1 coverage gap)

A coverage gap never fails check. To close it, add a validator for the requirement. See Add a validator tool for writing one.

  • Its refiners don't decide it. Some of its refiners are unknown, and their results could still change its own. Find the refiners with the query in the previous section, and close their gaps.

  • One of its validators could not be run. This also fails check. See A validator could not be run.

A failure was absorbedLink to this section

A requirement is unsatisfied, but every requirement it refines is still satisfied, usually because another branch of an OR passed. check reports the failure as a warning, which fails only with --deny-warnings. If the unsatisfied requirement is a MAY, the failure is informational and never fails check.

check passed locally but fails in CILink to this section

  • A program a descriptor runs is missing on the CI runner. Install it in an earlier step.
  • The descriptor store is empty on the runner. Run slcr tools install before check.
  • CI uses --deny-warnings and your local run didn't. Run the same command CI runs.
